Audio Engineering workshop for women

Been enjoying spending a lot of time hanging out with the talented female musicians in the Ottawa music community. I attended the film screening of Video Camp for Girls at the Saw Gallery, where they presented the documents the campers had made about Rock Camp For Girls, where I had volunteered as a keyboard instructor. It was so heartwarming to hear young women talk about their dreams of fighting sexism in the music industry and rocking out.  I also participated in an audio engineering workshop for women, learning how to work the soundboard.

Rock Camps & Record shops

Had a great time teaching keyboards at Ottawa Rock Camp for Girls! It was a pleasure working with these talented young women, and meeting other fabulous female musicians in Ottawa. I especially appreciated the chance to speak on a panel about being a female musician in Ottawa, hosted by Rachel from Debaser. Jamie Anderson wrote a great write-up about her experience teaching at the camp, which you can read here.

We also loved performing at the Record Centre as part of the Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women’s Shine the Light Campaign to raise awareness about this very important issue. It was so lovely to see such a fantastic turn out for this great event, and we definitely felt the love. CBC Ottawa listed this event as one of the top five picks for live music shows for the weekend, which was awesome.  We rocked out so hard we broke a bass string!

In keeping with the theme of fighting violence, our anti-suicide song “On the Land” was used recently in a video made by Mailyne of Dream Love Grow as part of a workshop she ran about youth and dating violence. We’re so pleased to have been able to be a small part of such a great project and an important cause!

We also want to thank CHUO FM for their continuous support, by playing our music on your No Filter and Debaser radio show. I enjoyed chatting with hosts Rachel and Mack on their radio show Debaser about our music and the Ottawa music community in general.

Thanks to Simon Edwards as well for playing our single Fault Lines on his UK radio show Simon’s Big New Thursday Thing, and bringing our music to British listeners!

Finally, in other news, I’m honoured to be doing a solo performance in December at Ochsfest, a tribute festival to Phil Ochs. I’ll be playing some original Scary Bear Soundtrack tune as well as a creatively interpreted Phil Ochs cover.
